Nicaragua has a chain of 19 active volcanoes called the Nicaraguan Volcanic Range, which runs along the western edge of the country and is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Some of the most significant and well-known Nicaragua volcanoes include Masaya, Concepcion, and Maderas on the island of Ometepe, Momotombo, and Cerro Negro. These volcanoes have been active throughout history, with some of them erupting regularly, and others have had catastrophic eruptions. Nicaragua is vulnerable to volcanic activity in the form of ashfall, pyroclastic flows, and lahars, which can have a significant impact on the population and agriculture. The Masaya Volcano National Park is a popular tourist destination, as it allows visitors to see the (comparatively) mild activity of the Masaya volcano, including lava eruptions in its crater.
